WORKED EXAMPLE · FICTIONAL PAGE

From a vague promise
to a useful plan.

This sample reviews the fictional “Northstar” page included in the package. It shows the report format, not measured business results.

Scope & limits

Input: a saved HTML fixture. Audience: freelance designers. Goal: start a project brief. No browser, performance measurement, analytics, or user testing was available. JavaScript-rendered content and visual contrast were not evaluated.

1. Explain who the product helps

Evidence: The only heading is “Work smarter”; the text “A platform for everyone” does not name a task or audience.

Proposed change: “Turn client notes into a project brief” with supporting text that explains the inputs and output. Use this only if the product actually delivers that outcome.

Priority: High impact / low effort. Confidence: medium. Validation: ask target users to explain what the product does after five seconds.

2. Give the next step a name

Evidence: The primary link says “Click here” and points to “#”.

Proposed change: Link “Start a project brief” to a working flow. State whether it requires an account or payment.

Priority: High impact / medium effort. Confidence: high that the link has no destination; expected conversion impact remains unmeasured.

3. Add missing HTML signals

Evidence: The fixture has no document title, description, viewport, or language declaration. Its email field has no accessible label, and its illustration has no alt attribute.

Proposed change: Add specific metadata and a visible form label. Decide whether the illustration is decorative (empty alt) or informative (meaningful alt). Test with keyboard and a screen reader.

Priority: Medium impact / low effort. Confidence: high for the missing markup. This does not prove the entire page is accessible.

Recommended order

Fix the broken action and missing field label first. Clarify the promise next. Add metadata, then run a browser review before release. Re-run the script and compare the evidence; do not turn the number of findings into a quality score.
